Matting to Music

Today I did a ton of matting and framing to get ready for selling at Super Crawl. I cut all my mats by hand with just a metal ruler, my mat cutter, and a whole lot of music loaded up in the CD player. The 4 albums I listened to today were:

I really enjoy being able to just work on a task that has enough repetition in it that I can really listen to the music.  It isn’t often that I have time to listen to 4 albums in a row uninterrupted. I also enjoy the process of matting and framing, lots of other artists find it tedious, but for me finishing off a piece of art with a crisp mat and a simple frame really feels validating. A piece of art doesn’t feel finished until it is able to be hung on a wall and enjoyed.

Organic Memory Paintings

3 more new pieces that I will be displaying at Super Crawl are from my “Organic Memory” Series. Organic shapes painted on green fabric are meant to give the feeling nature or allude to the memory of a natural environment with out specifically referencing an exact geographical location. In stead of a painting of a specific hike, picnic, or park, they are paintings of a wider memory of natural elements. The paintings are intended to spark the viewers own feelings and memories of interacting with the natural world.

Kerchief Paintings at Super Crawl

Kerchief No 2 - Randell Neudorf - 2013 - web sizeI’m very excited to be exhibiting some new paintings during Super Crawl weekend at the Makers’ Market.

These new paintings consist of kerchiefs found at used stores, stretched and and collaged over wood panels. I can’t help wondering who might of worn this piece of fabric before I stumbled upon it? What happy and sad memories did this kerchief bear witness too? Was it worn as a fashion statement or was it just a utilitarian way to keep ones ears warm and hair in place.

It is this sense of history that makes painting on a used material much more dynamic than a stark white canvas. You can feel the memory just out of reach as it sparks the imagination of the viewer, drawing on our own memories and notions of nostalgia to create a story.
